I love to question everything. It’s how I learn and how I understand.
From my own experience of being a mum of four, children ask A LOT of questions (and sometimes all at once!). I have a four year old who is in her season of asking WHY. Once she starts questioning, there is no stopping her. She has the tenacity to keep going until either she is satisfied with her understanding or I give up knowing how to answer yet another WHY question. It really can be a conversation that has no end!
I also have an eight year old who is in his season of asking WHAT, WHEN and WHERE. Between ages four and eight, he has transitioned from asking a gazillion WHY questions to now wanting to expand his understanding. With the same tenacity as my four year old, he is tremendously eager to discover those answers that satisfy his curiosity.
So that leaves my pre teen and my new teen who are in their season of HOW. Although a little less tenacious as my other two children with their questioning techniques, they still have the desire to fire away those questions. They are ready to ask about the practicalities of bringing action to all that they understand.
What a privilege it is to see in all four children the range of different uses of powerful questions. In isolation each stage is truly valuable. As they grow they intuitively progress into the next phase which allows natural movement and direction.
WHY | When something is brought to your attention, you tend to ask WHY. It gives you context, explores your understanding and nurtures your desire behind any goal. When something bad happens, it can bring comfort. Asking WHY is a truly important stage, however, if those answers do not satisfy, those unanswered WHY questions can hold you back and you may then feel stuck.
WHAT | WHEN | WHERE | These questions help you move from the past into the moment of where you are now. They expand your understanding and start bringing form to the possibility of what could be. They help you focus on your forward motion rather than causing you to look or stay back.
HOW | With a satisfied understanding of WHY, WHAT, WHEN and WHERE, you can begin to explore the wonderfully exciting HOW. This is an incredibly creative season that nurtures motivated action. As you connect to who you are and discover such wonder, your HOW will be beautifully awakened.
You may find that you dip in and out of the different questioning seasons. If you are struggling to move from any season, may I encourage you to reframe your question into one that will help you move along. A WHY question for example may cause you to stay in the past whereas a WHAT question may be the one that moves you from where you currently are to where you want to be.
QUESTION TIME: What question are you asking that is keeping you stuck? How does that make you feel? What question can you replace it with that will help you move forward? How does that make you feel?
